Learn to Skate

Our Skating School offers a variety of classes, from beginners through freestyle classes

Learn to Skate Class Descriptions

Tot 1

Ages 4 - 5
This class is for a newer skater or a skater with little skating experience.
Must be four years old by the start of the session.

The following skills will be mastered during this class

  • Proper way to fall
  • Proper way to get up (unassisted)
  • Balance on two feet
  • Marching
  • Dip in Place
  • Two foot glide
  • Policies

Once a skater passes Tot 1, register for Tot 2

  • Parents are not allowed on the ice during instruction or in the hockey boxes while classes are in session.
  • Skaters will be evaluated on the first day of class to ensure appropriate class placement
  • Skaters must wear helmets (bike or hockey). Dress with mittens and warm attire (snowpants, sweatpants, etc.)  Loose layers are best.
  • Beginner skaters are encouraged to wear good figure or hockey figure skates (no double blades)
  • Skates may be rented at the NSC
  • Continuing students should consider purchasing their own skates for best results

Tot 2

Ages 4 - 5
Must have passed Tot 1 to register for this class

  • Forward skating
  • Two foot glide
  • Single forward swizzle
  • Dip while moving
  • Backward skating
  • Policies

Once a skater passes Tot 2, register for Beginner 2

  • Skaters will be evaluated on the first day of class to ensure appropriate class placement
  • Skaters must wear helmets (bike or hockey). Dress with mittens and warm attire (snowpants, sweatpants, etc.)  Loose layers are best.
  • Beginner skaters are encouraged to wear good figure or hockey figure skates (no double blades)

Beginner 1

Ages 6 and up

  • One foot glide, left foot
  • One foot glide, right foot
  • One backward swizzle
  • Rocking horse
  • Two foot hop
  • Prep for snowplow stop
  • Policies

Once a skater passes Beginner 2, register for Pre Alpha

  1. Skaters will be evaluated on the first day of class to ensure appropriate class placement
  • Skaters are encouraged to wear helmets (bike or hockey). Dress with mittens and warm attire (snowpants, sweatpants, etc.)  Loose layers are best.

Pre Alpha

Must have passed Beginner 2 to register for this class
The following skills will be mastered during this class

  • Two foot glide
  • Backward wiggles
  • One foot glide, right foot
  • One foot glide, left foot
  • Three forward swizzles
  • Three backward swizzles
  • Policies

Once a skater passes Pre Alpha, register for Alpha

  • Skaters are encouraged to wear helmets (bike or hockey). Dress with mittens and warm attire (snowpants, sweatpants, etc.)  Loose layers are best.
  • Beginner skaters are encouraged to wear good figure or hockey figure skates (no double blades)
  • Skates may be rented at the NSC
  • Continuing students should consider purchasing their own skates for best results

Alpha

Must have passed Pre Alpha to register for this class
The following skills will be mastered during this class

  • Forward stroking
  • Snowplow stop
  • Forward crossovers, clockwise
  • Forward crossovers, counter clockwise
  • Policies

Once a skater passes Alpha, register for Beta

  • Skaters are encouraged to wear helmets (bike or hockey). Dress with mittens and warm attire (snowpants, sweatpants, etc.)  Loose layers are best.
  • Skates may be rented at the NSC
  • Continuing students should consider purchasing their own skates for best results
  • Parents are not allowed on the ice during instruction or in the hockey boxes while classes are in session.

Beta

Must have passed Alpha to register for this class
The following skills will be mastered during this class

  • Backward stroking
  • T stop, right foot
  • T stop, left foot
  • Backward crossovers, clockwise
  • Backward crossovers, counter clockwise
  • Policies

Additional class option

  • LTS Plus

Once a skater passes Beta, register for Gamma

  • Skaters are encouraged to wear helmets (bike or hockey). Dress with mittens and warm attire (snowpants, sweatpants, etc.)  Loose layers are best.
  • Skates may be rented at the NSC
  • Continuing students should consider purchasing their own skates for best results
  • Parents are not allowed on the ice during instruction or in the hockey boxes while classes are in session.

Gamma

Must have passed Beta to register for this class
The following skills will be mastered during this class

  • Forward outside three turn, right foot
  • Forward outside three turn. left foot
  • Forward mohawk combination, clockwise
  • Forward mohawk combination, counter clockwise
  • Hockey Stop
  • Policies

Additional class option

  • LTS Plus

Once a skater passes Gamma, register for Delta

Once a skater passes Delta, register ISI Freestyle Class (on ice), optional off ice technique or private lessons.

  • Dress with mittens and warm attire (snowpants, sweatpants, etc.)  Loose layers are best.
  • Skates may be rented at the NSC
  • Continuing students should consider purchasing their own skates for best results
  • Parents are not allowed on the ice during instruction or in the hockey boxes while classes are in session.

Delta

Must have passed Gamma to register for this class
The following skills will be mastered during this class

  • Forward inside three turn, right foot
  • Forward inside three turn, left foot
  • Forward outside consecutive edges
  • Forward inside consecutive edges
  • Shoot the duck or lunge
  • Bunny hop
  • Policies

Additional class option

  • LTS Plus

Once a skater passes Delta, register ISI Freestyle Class (on ice), optional off ice technique or private lessons.

  • Dress with mittens and warm attire (snowpants, sweatpants, etc.)  Loose layers are best.
  • Skates may be rented at the NSC
  • Continuing students should consider purchasing their own skates for best results
  • Parents are not allowed on the ice during instruction or in the hockey boxes while classes are in session.

Learn to Skate Plus

We will introduce many basic skating skills from various levels as well as introduce beginning jumps & spins.

The LTS+ program is for Learn to Skate students who are interested in adding additional training to their group class or private lessons to fast track through the learn to skate levels and introduce skills more specific to figure skating sooner than the traditional learn to skate program.

<> Must also be enrolled in traditional group classes or private lessons.


ISI Freestyle 1 - 10

After completing the learn to skate classes the skaters have the opportunity to enter our Freestyle program. This program focuses on the jumps and spins of figure skating. We offer many class options for skaters at these levels, as well as private instruction. The following are class options to our Freestyle skaters

Advanced LTS Plus / ISI Freestyle / Technique Group Classes

Axel Axelerate

Group class for skaters interested in working on drills and exercises that are axel specific. Passed ISI Freestyle 4

Technique Half/Single to Axel (Freestyle 1 - 4)

Group class focusing on flexibility, jumps, movement, spinners, agility, alignment and more

ISI Freestyle 1 - 4

On ice group class for skaters who have passed at least the ISI Delta level. Class levels Freestyle 1 - 4, skaters will be grouped by ISI Freestyle level

Learn to Skate PLUS

We will introduce many basic skating skills from various levels as well as introduce beginning jumps & spins. The LTS+ program is for Learn to Skate students who are interested in adding additional training to their group class or private lessons to fast track through the learn to skate levels, and introduce skills more specific to figure skating sooner than the traditional learn to skate program. <> must also be enrolled in traditional group classes or private lessons.
Two levels are offered <> PreAlpha/Alpha and Beta/Gamma/Delta

 

Freestyle 1

  • Forward inside pivot
  • Two foot spin
  • Forward arabesque
  • Backward outside consecutive edges
  • Backward inside consecutive edges
  • One - half flip jump
  • Waltz jump
  • Solo program including all the above maneuvers must be performed to music for 1:30 minute

Freestyle 2

  • Ballet jump
  • Waltz jump - tap toe - One Half Flip
  • One - half lutz
  • One foot spin
  • Two forward arabesques
  • Dance step
  • Solo program including all the above maneuvers must be performed to music for 1:30 minute

Freestyle 3

  • Backward outside or inside pivot
  • Salchow jump
  • Change foot spin
  • Backward arabesque
  • Choice of one: toe loop jump or toe walley jump
  • Dance step
  • Solo program including all the above maneuvers must be performed to music for 1:30 minute

Freestyle 4

  • Flip jump
  • Loop jump
  • Sit spin
  • One - half loop jump
  • Two backward Arabesques
  • Dance step
  • Solo program including all the above maneuvers must be performed to music for 2 minutes

Freestyle 5

  • Lutz jump
  • Axel jump
  • Camel spin
  • Camel - sit - upright spin
  • Fast back scratch spin
  • Dance step
  • Solo program including all the above maneuvers must be performed to music for 2 minutes

Freestyle 6

  • Split jump
  • Split falling leaf jump
  • Jump sequence: axel / one half loop / flip
  • Double salchow jump
  • Choice of one: cross foot spin, layback or sit - change - sit
  • Spin combination
  • Dance step
  • Solo program including all the above maneuvers must be performed to music for 2:30 minutes

Freestyle 7

  • Double toe loop or double toe walley jump
  • Two walley jumps in a row
  • Combination spin with change of foot and position
  • Flying camel
  • Jump sequence: one - foot axel / one - quarter flip / axel
  • Opposite jump
  • Dance step
  • Solo program including all the above maneuvers must be performed to music for 3 minutes

Freestyle 8

Must test at a District Test Session

  • Double loop jump
  • Double flip jump
  • Split lutz jump
  • Choice of one: flying sit or axel sit spin
  • Jump sequence: one and one - quarter flip / one and one - quarter flip / double salchow
  • Camel - jump - camel spin
  • Dance step
  • Solo program including all the above maneuvers must be performed to music for 3:30 minutes

 

Freestyle 9

Must test at a District Test Session

  • Opposite spin
  • Double lutz jump
  • Axel - double loop jump combination
  • Jump choice: double axel or axel in the opposite direction
  • Jump combination: rocker or counter jump / double toe assisted jump / double loop
  • Flying camel spin into a jump sit spin
  • Dance sequence
  • Solo program including all the above maneuvers must be performed to music for 4 minutes

Freestyle 10

Must be tested at an ISI National event

  • Jump combination: double axel / double toe loop
  • Triple edge jump
  • Death drop
  • Choice of one: four alternating axels in sequence or triple toe assisted jump
  • Choice of one: double jump to the right and double jump to the left or triple toe assisted jump / double loop combination
  • Choice of one: three arabian cartwheel in a row or three butterfly jump in a row
  • Creative dance step sequence
  • Solo program including all the above maneuvers must be performed to music for 4 minutes
